Commisioner Inez Newberry
(March 19, 1924—November 30, 2007)

Commissioner Inez Newberry was promoted to Glory from Easton, Pa.

Inez was born in Freeland, Pa. When Inez was 10, her mother passed away, and when she was 12, her father remarried, and the family moved to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Inez came to the Army through the Girl Guard program.

Inez entered the training college in Atlanta, Ga., from Monroe, La., and was commissioned in 1944. She served in several corps appointments in the Southern Territory before she was transferred to Ceylon, India, as a finance officer in 1953. She attended the International College for Officers (ICO) in 1958.

In the years that followed, she served in various appointments both in the USA Southern Territory and in India, including the Southern, North Eastern, and Eastern India territories.

In 1982, she became territorial commander of Eastern India with Bangladesh. In 1983, she became territorial commander of South Western India, and on February 1, 1984, she became a commissioner. She was the first American woman commissioner and territorial commander.

In an interview she was asked about overseas ministry, and her response was, “But of this I have not the slightest doubt, God will open doors somewhere for those who answer His call!”

During the past few years, her health had declined, and her loving sister Jennie cared for her. Messages of support can be sent to Ms. Jennie Reese, 600 Bennett Street, Apt. 303, Luzerne, PA, 18709.
