“…Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth…. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
—2 Timothy 3:7 (KJV), 2:15 (NIV)
We’ve stepped into the year 2010. It’s easy to write, but how do you say it? The world still hasn’t decided whether it should be “twenty–ten,” “two–thousand–ten,” “oh–ten,” or just plain “ten.”
A larger problem is humanity’s struggle to manage the bewildering information explosion intrinsic with this New Year. Today through the Internet, knowledge is available on virtually any topic.
Recently, Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, the world’s largest Internet search engine, said, “It will be possible to literally know everything, to measure everything.” *
“And in 10 years,” Schmidt says, “your cell phone [also Google enabled] will operate 100 times faster than it does now.”
That’s because every 18 months, computer power literally doubles, according to Gordon Moore. In 1965, he successfully predicted the exponential growth of computer technology.
Knowing the truth
“Moore’s Law” notwithstanding, the wisdom to know the difference between right and wrong, between truth and “spin,” and between substance and “SPAM” is still beyond the reach of computers.
“We don’t know how to prove something is true,” says Schmidt, “but we can rank the possible answers, starting with the one that is most likely to be true, and so on.
“It’s a race between the people who want to create information and those people who want to create misinformation and disinformation,” says Schmidt, whose company’s motto is “Don’t do evil.”
Only strong faith in God will win the race against such evil. Google can’t do that. Our first line of defense is a healthy respect for the One who already knows and measures everything.
In a plethora of secular information and invention, we must continue to rely on Him for divine revelation. Fear of the Lord is still the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10).
Even with the global power of Google, it’s the All Mighty God, the Creator of all things, who is still the Way, the Truth, and the Light.
Even in this year of our Lord 2010, however you choose to say it.
