A great celebration is planned in Boston Jan. 8–11—including an open–air on the Boston Common that is open to the public—to mark one of the epochal moments in Salvation Army history: the 125th anniversary of Commissioner Samuel Logan Brengle’s holiness experience.

Brengle, regarded as the Salvation Army’s “holiness apostle,” said that at 9 a.m. on Jan. 9, 1885, God “sanctified my soul.”

Major David Antill, the territory’s ambassador for holiness, said, “It is our prayer that God will [impart such a blessing] again! But this time, may a fresh baptism of love come, not just upon one individual, but upon the entire Eastern Territory as General Shaw Clifton proclaims on Boston Common that the possibility of Christlike living continues today.”

The celebration will be broken into three parts: the territory’s Holiness Institute from Friday to Sunday morning; an open–air at 3:30 p.m. on Boston Common and an All New England Holiness Rally at 5:30 p.m.; and a Holiness Symposium on Monday.

The Institute, modeled after the Brengle Holiness Institute, begins on Friday at the Sheraton Hotel under the leadership of Commissioners Lawrence and Nancy Moretz, territorial leaders.

The speakers include General Shaw Clifton and Commissioner Helen Clifton; Commissioner William Francis, territorial commander in Canada & Bermuda; Lt. Colonels Richard and Janet Munn, principal & associate principal of the International College for Officers and (Janet) secretary for the Center for Spiritual Formation; and authors Roger Green and David Rightmire.

Carol Jaudes, director of the territory’s Special Events & Arts Ministries Bureau, will direct a musical on Saturday night.

The open–air and holiness rally at the Sheraton Hotel are both open to the public.

The General will also speak on Monday at the annual Holiness Symposium.
